The ticking clock doesn't have to represent time that is running out. The ticking clock also can represent time that a person still has plenty of. There is no such thing as predestination. No person's fate is set in stone. If disaster strikes, it isn't predestination's fault, but rather the fault of the person who took the wrong course of action. By allowing fear to force the wrong path, disaster could result. By allowing fear to force the wrong path but manages to avoid disaster provides the chance to choose the right path before it's too late. It's all a matter of having the confidence needed to pick the right road and having the confidence to stay on the right road. Not even the illusion of predestination could possibly take that away.
